The Pre-Kindergarten teachers use a scientific research-based curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and implemented with attention to the different needs, abilities, learning styles, and developmental levels of the individual child. The curriculum guides experiences to promote student progress toward the specific benchmarks outlined in the eight domains of child development described in the OSR (Office of School Readiness) Performance Standards.
Why High-Quality Pre-K?
Children who participate in High-Quality Pre-K:
- Demonstrate higher academic achievement
- Are less likely to repeat a grade
- Less likely to require special education classes
- More likely to graduate from high school
- More likely to enroll in college
- Less likely to participate in criminal activity during the juvenile or adult years
- Less likely to be victims of child maltreatment or neglect
- As adults are less likely to be unemployed
- More likely to have higher earnings than similar students who do not participate in Pre-K
- Less likely to depend on public assistance, become teenage parents, or endanger their health by smoking
First Class Pre-K Requirements:
- Programs shall operate at least 180 days each year and at least 6.5 hours a day.
- Each classroom shall meet DHR Child Care Licensing Standards.
- Each classroom shall have no more than 18 students with a 9:1 student-to-staff ratio.
2025-2026 Pre-K Program Pre-Registration Information
- First Class Pre-K programs are accepting online pre-registration applications for the 2025-2026 school year beginning January 15, 2025. (If you need assistance with accessing the online application, contact Scottsboro City Schools at 256-218-2100.)
- Pre-registration dates will be January 15, 2025, through March 14, 2025.
- Enrollment is open to all children four years of age on or before 9/1/25 who are residents of Alabama. (Children who are eligible for Kindergarten are not eligible for Pre-K.)
- Enrollees must provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate. (It may be uploaded into the online pre-registration site or submitted directly to the school or SCS Board of Education.)
- Enrollees must provide proof of residency, either a current utility bill or a copy of a lease or mortgage. (It may be uploaded into the online pre-registration site or submitted directly to the local school or SCS Board of Education.)
- Public school system Pre-K programs may have zoning requirements that may determine eligibility for attending a program at a particular school. (Contact the SCS Board of Education at 256-218-2100.)
- There is no registration fee for First Class Pre-K programs.
- Upon enrollment, a child’s immunization record must be provided to the school or SCS Board of Education.
- No child will be denied participation on the basis of income, sex, race, color, national origin, or disability.
- Scottsboro City School will waive Out-of-District tuition fees for the 2025-2026 school year (Pre-K students ONLY.)
Dates of Enrollment/Registration Dates: January 15, 2025, through March 14, 2025.
Parent/Guardian Notification: Email notices of acceptance status will be sent April 16th-18th, 2025. ADECA triggers emails notifying families of pending or waitlists. The parent and/or Guardian must accept or decline. If no response is received within ten (10) business days, students will be returned to the waitlist.
Acceptance to the Program: Acceptance is strictly through a random drawing held on March 19, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Scottsboro Board of Education 305 S. Scott Street Scottsboro, AL. 35768.
Parents or guardians are not required to attend the drawing.
